“Who do I think I am?
Who are you?
Who are you?
I am a walrus.”
–Brian, The Breakfast Club
Hi, my name is Emily and welcome to my blog. I think Brian from The Breakfast Club pretty nicely summed up who I am — I’m a walrus, e.g. an odd duck. Brian put it quite well in his essay at the end of the movie: “…you see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions…”
We all have our labels — some of mine include: social worker, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, girlfriend, Christian, have bipolar disorder, victim of rape..the list goes on. I don’t believe that labels truly encapsulate who we are. Read my first post to learn a little bit more about my story and these labels. Also read my first post to learn the full meaning behind my blog name.
What makes me me?
I love coffee. No, I adore coffee. And chocolate. And peanut butter. In fact, put them all together and I am in heaven.
Top three favorite movies in this order: When Harry Met Sally, Newsies, The Breakfast Club.
I absolutely love to travel — I have been bit by the travel bug. It’s been a while since I’ve gone anywhere, but I have been fortunate enough to spend time in Mexico, live in Alaska, bicycle across Australia, study in Spain, and travel throughout Europe including: Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Berlin, Salzburg, and Rome.
I’m a book worm, always have been and always will be. Favorite book(s) are the Harry Potter series — so much so that I have the outline of Hogwarts tattooed on my left rib cage with the words “until the very end” surrounding the skyline. It’s pretty epic, not gonna lie (I also have Psalm 18:1 on the inside of my lower right ankle with two doves and a cross).
I love people and am quite social and talkative, yet I am a massive introvert. I need need need my alone time. I love to read, and watch TV, and snuggle, and craft, and nap, and dabble on the keyboard — anything that’s done mostly alone and/or quietly.
I like to pretend to be athletic and outdoorsy. I’ve attempted to become and embody the lifestyle of a triathlete. I’ve successfully completed a sprint triathlon. I’ve ran many 5Ks and one 10K. I’ve gone backpacking and hiking a handful of times. But mostly, I’d just prefer to set up a tent and sit by the fire roasting mallows and having good conversation around the campfire with friends and a hard cider or a margarita.
>> and there’s much more to who I am; I invite you to journey with me through this thing we call life. Reach out, say hello. Grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of cab franc) and join in!
